Mattress Upgrade – Mattress Health

We spend much time choosing the right mattress to enjoy peaceful and relaxed sleep, burying all our problems and entering a state of tranquillity. A mattress is the most important part of any room, a space to unwind and relax. We cannot jeopardize the quality of a mattress as we ought to share a long-lasting relationship with it. It is interesting to note that a mattress also has its limits and a time frame that decides its lifespan.

The lifespan of a mattress

The typical lifespan of a mattress is 7 to 10 years. It depends upon many factors and is prone to change. The materials used inside the mattress, its weight, sleeping position, dust & water contact etc. are some such factors. Our relationship with the mattress is so deep-rooted that we tend to ignore the minor flaws or issues. Unless and until our sleep is compromised, we don’t feel the need to change the mattress. But, it is always a healthy option to buy a new mattress considering the accumulation of dust mites, bed bugs etc. over the years, causing inconvenience to your health and sleep.

Factors influencing your Mattress Lifespan

Here are some of the factors that contribute to the lifespan of a mattress:

  1. Materials : A mattress is made using different types of materials, each of which contributes to its lifespan. Foam, latex, coir, Rubber, spring, hybrid etc are some of the materials used to make a mattress. Latex and high-density memory foam or polyfoam mattresses last longer while hybrid models, spring mattresses and low-density foam mattresses wear out easily and have a short lifespan of 5 to 6 years.
  2. Quality:  A good quality mattress, made using high-quality materials often last longer, offering the most comfortable sleep. On the other hand, a mattress made using cheap materials will wear out soon and make our sleep very uncomfortable. Price cannot always be considered a benchmark for quality and durability.
  3. Sleep Position and Body Weight: Our sleeping position and body weight affect the durability of our mattresses. A heavy person may find their mattress beginning to sag prematurely while a side-sleeper may experience sagging towards the hip and shoulders.
  4. Care Routine: Our mattresses will last longer if we take good care. Occasional cleaning, vacuuming, using protective covers and following specific care guidelines will ensure longevity.

The performance and durability of different types of mattresses are as follows:

  1. Spring: The average lifespan of a spring mattress is 5.5 to 6.5 years offering good resistance to premature softening and body impressions. While the durability and resistance to sagging vary from poor to fair, the mattress has a short life span.
  2. Foam: A foam mattress usually lasts 6 to 7 years providing less resistance to sagging, premature softening and body impressions. But in terms of durability and longevity, a foam mattress out wins an innerspring mattress.
  3. Latex: The average lifespan of a latex mattress is 7.5 to 8.5 years and offers good resistance to premature sagging, softening and body impressions. A latex mattress also guarantees a durable and long life.
  4. Hybrid: Hybrid is the best material option for a mattress, that gives an average life span of 6.5 to 7.5 years with fairly good resistance to sagging, premature softening and body impressions. A hybrid is a perfect example of a highly durable and longevity mattress

When must I Replace my Mattress?

The following questions will help identify when the mattress should be replaced:

  • Are you sleeping well?
  • Do you feel you sleep better in a hotel or when visiting a family?
  • Do you feel that your mattress is saggy or unsupportive?
  • Do you wake up in the morning with a body ache or pain?
  • Do you toss and turn around uncomfortably throughout the night?
  • Do you feel your partner moves a lot more unusually at night?
  • Have you noticed an increase in allergies or asthma symptoms?
  • Has it been more than 7 years since you purchased the mattress?

If your answer is “yes” to one or more of the above questions, then it’s time to buy yourself a new mattress.
